Chen Yang

Chen Yang is the Executive Dean and Professor of the School for the Gifted Young at the University of Science and Technology of China. In an interview, he emphasized that while the students in the gifted program are intelligent, they are not prodigies. The selection process primarily focuses on college entrance exam scores, mathematics and physics written tests, and values students’ abilities and willingness. He pointed out that age is not a key factor in admission; instead, the school focuses on students’ innovative abilities and potential, providing them with a platform for personalized education. He believes the biggest advantage of the gifted education program is its solid foundation courses, allowing students to freely choose their majors after one year. The program also emphasizes cultivating a sense of gratitude and comprehensive qualities, enabling students to understand the importance of giving back to society.
